Joseph-Rouleau Hall resonates with the rhythm of musical variations
Montreal, October 11, 2022 – Jeunesses Musicales Canada (JM Canada) gets its new season off to a flying start from October 19 to 23, 2022 with the En avant l’art vivant ! event in Joseph-Rouleau Hall at the André-Bourbeau House. On the program: a master class, musical story time, a dance, and off-series concerts—all hosted by drag queen Barbada, accompanied by cellist Stéphane Tétreault.
“JM Canada concerts offer a unique opportunity to meet professional emerging musicians who are bound for promising careers. Tenor Marc Hervieux, contralto Marie-Nicole Lemieux, and more recently, pianist Charles Richard-Hamelin, cellist Stéphane Tétreault, pianist Philippe Prud’homme, and the Stick & Bow duo are all artists who toured with JM Canada early in their careers,” stated Danièle LeBlanc, Executive and Artistic Director.
JM Canada also wants the Montreal community to get to know its performance hall, which remains a well-hidden treasure. Easily accessible by metro (Mont-Royal station), Joseph-Rouleau Hall offers exceptional acoustics in a cozy and intimate atmosphere.
EN AVANT L’ART VIVANT! PROGRAMMING
Master Class with Stéphane Tétreault
The public is invited to come discover and encourage young Canadian artists of tomorrow in an intimate setting. In this master class with renowned cellist Stéphane Tétreault, students from the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal will get the opportunity to interact with an established artist while furthering their knowledge of the repertoire and the instrument.

Musical Story Time with Barbada
For this very special story time, Barbada will be joined by pianist Xavier Rousseau. Children are invited to a fun and friendly activity aimed at raising their awareness of inclusion and developing their love of reading and music. A brief but thoroughly enjoyable foray into the colourful world of drag queens!

More Body Beats! Workshop
In this introduction to rhythm, young people will learn about and observe various musical cultures that use the body as a percussion instrument. Working in groups, they will take on rhythmic challenges and create a body percussion orchestra.
Free: October 21, 2022 at 1 pm – School activity: ages 7-12 – Limited seating open to the public (upon reservation)
Barbada and the Globetrotters Ball
Barbada and five artists with a passion for music take children on a festive, dance-filled adventure. From South America to Europe to India, young and old alike will explore various musical traditions and come to realize that cultural diversity is a rich treasure!
Free: October 22, 2022 at 10 am and 11:30 am – General public activity: ages 6-10 (upon reservation).
Carte blanche for Barbada and Stéphane Tétreault
A wildly exciting evening presented by cellist Stéphane Tétreault and drag queen Barbada. A unique concert that shines a spotlight on music, humour, tenderness, and levity! Listen to works for cello as Barbada, Stéphane, and their surprise guests debunk myths about classical music, drawing us into a world in which styles merge and intermingle…

THE SEASON CONTINUES
After this wonderful kick-off event, JM Canada is inviting the public to embark on a rich and colourful musical journey, with Cushion Concerts for children and Happy Hour Concerts for adults.
Happy Hour Concerts Series
On six Thursday evenings through the season, the finest up-and-coming musicians will play a 60- to 75-minute concert without intermission, featuring commentary on the music.
The artist in residence for this fall, pianist Meagan Milatz, invites the public to join her as she and her colleagues present three unique concerts:
- Les voix d’Europe de l’Est on October 20, 2022, with violinist Isabella D’Éloize, will explore the sounds of Eastern Europe.
- Mosaïques hongroises on November 17, 2022, with violinist Andrew Wan and clarinetist Todd Cope, invites the audience to discover the musical landscape of Hungary.
- Le piano romantique on December 1st, 2022, will offer an exploration of music written for solo piano in the 19th century.
On January 26, 2023, cellist Dominique Beauséjour-Ostiguy and guitarist Christ Habib will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of composer Astor Piazzolla with the sounds of his greatest inspirations in a Hommage à Piazzolla concert.
Then, on February 23, 2023, clarinetist Louis-Benoît Caron, accompanied on the piano by Julien Leblanc, will present an ode to nature in Entre Ciel et Terre.
For Happy Hour Concerts, the venue opens at 6 pm, at which time the audience can enjoy a free glass of wine—selected and offered by our partner réZin—prior to the start of the concert at 7 pm.
Cushion Concerts Series
Starting at 3 years of age, young music lovers can enjoy the Cushion Concerts’ six theatrical and educational shows, providing a captivating introduction to opera, the flute, the lute, the clarinet, and electroacoustic music. A great variety of ways to explore all that music has to offer. Concerts take place on Sundays at 10 am and 11:30 am.
- On October 23 and 30, 2022, just in time for Halloween, the concert Opéra-Bonbon: l’aventure gourmande d’Hansel et Gretel will offer an introduction to opera and operatic singing that is just as delicious as a candy treat!
- On December 4 and 11, 2022, Le grand bal de Noël, with its mocking penguins and Christmas songs, will put young and old in the holiday spirit.
- La récréation de Mozart, on February 12, 2023, will then add a touch of fantasy, featuring an unruly young Mozart.
- The artists of Les Athlètes de la flûte à bec concert, on March 19, 2023, will thrill and amaze audiences with their Olympic skills and array of recorders.
- On April 16, 2023, the concert Le luth, l’ami des rois will whisk children off to the courts of France, England, and Denmark, introducing them to an instrument that looks like an Eastern jewel.
- On May 14, 2023—at 10 a.m. only—, Zoom-Boom-Boom will introduce younger children to electroacoustic music through the imaginary world of Sam, where everything can become music.
